ABOUT UCGC

The UNESCO Center for Global Citizenship (UCGC), is located in Urbana-Champaign, IL, the vibrant and diverse hometown of the University of Illinois. It is part of a network of over 4,000 UNESCO centers, associations and clubs in more than 100 countries, and is the second UNESCO affiliate in the U.S. UCGC is a community-university organization founded on the belief that multicultural knowledge and intercultural understanding generate a better, more interesting, more productive, and -above all - more peaceful world in which to live. At a time of great global challenges, UCGC seeks to foment the development of 21st century skills, informed international perspectives, and diverse world values that will assist with the formation of a truly global citizenry.

UCGC has the following goals:

  1. To advance the cause of global citizenship.

  2. To strengthen intercultural understanding through multicultural knowledge and dialogue.

  3. To promote awareness of the role of cultural heritage in building sustainable communities.

  4. To increase discussion of American public policy.

  5. To advocate for the building of peace, eradication of poverty, and equitable treatment of all children, women, races, nationalities and religions.

  6. To contribute to an inclusive knowledge society around the globe through dissemination of educational, cultural and scientific information.

Amani Ayad, Program Coordinator for the Library and Information Science Access Midwest Program

 

Barbara Ford, Mortensen Distinguished Professor at the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and former Director of the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs and . In 2011, she was appointed to the US National Commission for UNESCO.

 

Helaine Silverman, Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Collaborative for Cultural Heritage Management and Policy (CHAMP) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
